Lent day 3

Lent 2014 Day #3
Friday, March 7, 2014
Luke 13:1-3 At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. He asked them, “Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? No I tell you; but unless you repent, you will perish as they did.”
I grew up in a Saturday night Christer Catholic family. For those who don’t know what a Saturday night Christer is, it is this:
You can do anything Sunday through Saturday, go to confession and do it all over again. You only have to attend Mass on Christmas and Easter. Eventually you would stop going to confession because God already knew what you were doing. Repentance and penance might have been observed lightly for Lent, in my family it was like a New Years resolution if you kept it great, if not, oh well.
It was only when I began my walk with the Lord that I saw the real need of repentance and penance. It meant more than giving up some luxury for a small amount of time. It means an honest relation with the Lord. I am a sinner. God will forgive my sins only if I am truly sorry for doing them. The only way to show my sorrow is to confess them to the Lord. I know that I am going to sin as I am human and as such am fallen. After talking with the Lord, yep I talk to God, I try to do something for someone else. Preferably they don’t know I am the one doing it. Even something as small as picking up litter on my walk, or giving a smile to someone who needs it but doesn’t know it, helps to pay penance for my sin. If you can help someone, do. If not, do so anyway.
Prayer: Lord, as we talk to you help us to confess our sins and walk in your light. AMEN
